Spurs sign Kevin Martin, release Rasual Butler

It took several days, but the Spurs have signed Kevin Martin. To make room for the veteran shooting guard, San Antonio waived Rasual Butler.

Martin, 33, agreed to a buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 1, just moments before a deadline that would allow him to play for another team in the postseason. He then spent a few days deciding on his new landing spot before choosing San Antonio.

However, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Spurs then needed a few days to decide which player they would waive to make room for Martin. On Wednesday, the team opted to keep 35-year-old forward Matt Bonner, who reportedly has good chemistry with Tim Duncan and other Spurs veterans, over the 36-year-old Butler.

Through 39 games in Minnesota, including 12 starts, Martin was having his least effective season since his rookie campaign in 2004-05. The 6-7, 200-pound player averaged 10.6 points on the worst shooting percentage (.377) of his career.

However, Martin had been struggling with a wrist injury for much of the season, and he has proven in the past to be an effective perimeter scorer. His career numbers include a 17.6 points-per-game average, .438 shooting percentage and a .385 percentage on three-point attempts.

Martin will reunite with another veteran guard who was bought out by the Timberwolves earlier this season, Andre Miller. They will both be reserves, along with the likes of Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw and David West, on a Spurs team that, at 54-10, is nearly keeping pace with the Golden State Warriors’ record-setting start.
