Seahawks LT Russell Okung sets visits with Lions and Giants

While the Seahawks were able to keep receiver Jermaine Kearse in the fold Thursday, they also learned that left tackle Russell Okung will take visits to a couple of other teams as he continues to explore his free agent options.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Okung will take visits on Friday to the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants.

Detroit could be looking at Okung as either a left or right tackle while the Giants would likely be looking at him more as a right tackle since they have Ereck Flowers at left tackle. A separate report said the 49ers have also reached out to Okung. Okung will reportedly visit the Giants first and then head to Detroit, though those plans could change if he decided to sign with New York while he is there.

Okung is representing himself in free agency and he is having to do the work himself of setting up visits. He also had to wait until Wednesday to begin officially talking to teams since only agents could negotiate during the “legal tampering” period that began Monday or at the NFL combine. Interestingly, Flowers also represented himself last year meaning the Giants could have bookend tackles who each are their own agents.

Also an issue for Okung is his shoulder, on which he had surgery last month after suffering a dislocation in the divisional playoff loss at Carolina. Okung will undoubtedly be using the visits to try to calm any concerns teams may have about his health.

There had been a thought Okung might try to get close to $11 million.

It’s thought the Seahawks have been continuing to talk to Okung and are keeping the lines of communication open with him.

On Wednesday the Seahawks saw starting right guard J.R. Sweezy sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s been thought a goal of the Seahawks throughout the process has been to try to keep at least one of Sweezy or Okung to keep some continuity on the offensive line.
