Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin plans to sign with Raiders

The Oakland Raiders head into free agency with a lot of cap space, and they reportedly plan to use some of it on Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin.

According to NFL.com, Irvin and the Raiders have agreed to terms on a deal that the linebacker will sign when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed.

The Raiders basically came out of nowhere to land Irvin.

Teams have been able to negotiate with impending free agents since Monday (it's called the "legal tamerping" phase), and in that time, Irvin had been linked to several teams, including the Cardinals, Falcons and Jaguars.

The Falcons and Jaguars both made sense because Irvin would've been familiar with the defensive philosophy of both teams, as Atlanta and Jacksonville are both coached by former Seahawks defensive coordinators (Dan Quinn, Gus Bradley).

In the end, it might've been the Raiders defensive coordinator, Ken Norton Jr., who helped get Irvin to Oakland. Norton was Irvin's linebacker coach in Seattle from 2012-14 before being hired by the Raiders in 2015.

Irvin will also join former teammate and Super Bowl XLVIII MVP Malcolm Smith on Oakland's defense.

The addition of Irvin means the Raiders now have two serious passing-rushing threats in their linebacking corps. The Seahawks linebacker will join Khalil Mack, who's headed into his third season with the Raiders after being selected fifth overall in 2015.

The 15th overall pick in the 2012 draft, Irvin has tallied 22 sacks in four years with the Seahawks, including 5½ in 2015.

If you're wondering what free agency can be like for a player about to hit the market, just ask Irvin. The new Raiders linebacker sounds relieved that the process is over.
