Janoris Jenkins agrees to deal with Giants, report says

The Giants reportedly have taken a major step toward improving their pass defense by agreeing to terms with Janoris Jenkins, the top cornerback on the free agency market.

ESPN is reporting that the team and Jenkins of the Rams will announce a deal when free agency officially opens at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Jenkins, 27, was a second-round pick for the Rams out of Florida and North Alabama in 2012 and, despite a red-flagged college career that saw him dismissed from the Gators team after two drug charges, he has missed just four games in the NFL.

Jenkins has been a starter all four years in the league with 10 career interceptions, including five which were returned for touchdowns.

Jenkins was pursued to re-sign with the Rams and also was courted by the Raiders during the “legal tampering” period of the past few days. Although the terms of the contract are not yet clear, the Giants and their glut of salary cap space likely outbid the other teams.

Jenkins will be paired opposite Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Giants’ secondary. The addition of Jenkins means the Giants are unlikely to retain Prince Amukamara, their former first-round pick who will become a free agent Wednesday afternoon.

The Giants’ main focus so far in free agency has been on solidifying their defense. They re-signed Jason Pierre-Paul, made a significant offer to DE Charles Johnson (who ultimately returned to sign with the Panthers for less money), and are expected to be among the teams in hot pursuit of defensive end Olivier Vernon. Vernon received the transition tag from the Dolphins, which allows them to match any offer he receives. Miami’s signing of Mario Williams and their reported interest in keeping Cameron Wake makes their matching any offer less likely.

The Giants finished 2015 ranked last in pass defense and were nearly the first team in NFL history to average 300 passing yards against per game for a full season. They finished allowing 298.9 yards per game. Their 23 sacks ranked 30th in the NFL.
